The Nutcracker
Serendipity is a great thing. A couple of weeks ago I played golf with a great guy who turned out to be the manager for the Zürich Ballet, and then MaryJo posts about the Nutcracker on her Seattle Traveler blog.
So, it seems only fair to mention that the Zurich Ballet is also performing the Nutcracker at the Zurich Opera House this winter.
The Zurich Ballet was described by the Herald Tribune as “The most beautiful company of dancers in Europe” and has recently returned from a tour of Asia with an innovative production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The Nutcracker was written by Tchaikovsky based on a fantasy fairytale written by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The piece focusses on the contrast between the world of children and that of adults; with the child’s world characterised by imagination, colourfulness and diversity, and that of adults as the opposite.
That, at least, is the official view, all I know is that it is a great ballet to see around Christmas time, and a great way to introduce children to the cultural arts! And clearly Tchaikovsky never worked at an investment bank, where imagination, colourfulness and diversity are pre-requisites for a successful career.
The production comes under the direction of Heinz Spoerli - one of Europe’s leading choreographers, although he prefers the term “Dance Maker”. He has now been at Zurich for 10 years, developing the ballet to a major European company.
The Nutcracker is being performed on the following dates:
Sat, 20.10.2007
Wed, 14.11.2007
Sun, 16.12.2007
Thu, 10.01.2008
