Restaurant: Zeughauskeller - Zurich
Slap bang in the middle of Zurich is one of the most traditional restaurants you’ll find in Switzerland.
And surprisingly, it is exceptionally good value!
Haute Cuisine its not - as I sad we’re talking tradition here. But tasty and good is what the food is, with the menu being heavily biased towards the good old sausage.
You may remember a while back, when dear old Hugo recommended the sausages at Sterne-Foifi, but he says this place is even better.
It’s Hugo’s ambition to work through all of the different types of sausage on the menu, and I suspect that given the chance he’d attempt to do it all on the same day.
There are over 20 types of Swiss sausage available, and even a one-meter long one (that’s 39 inches) if you feel like sharing. Hugo doesn’t!
Sausages are generally served with the speciality potato salad, but they’ll substitute fries or Rösti if you ask.
The Zeughauskeller is located at Paradeplatz, so virtually every Zurich tram will take you close.
It does get popular, with queues outside (well, in the entrance halls when it’s chilly like it is now) so best to book, especially if you plan a large party.
And when you are there, don’t forget to look up. There are interesting pictures, and of course a cow, a memento of the original Zurich cow exhibition. And celebrating the military history (Zeughaus means Arsenal) there is an impressive howitzer above one of the doors.
As it’s more like a bier-keller than a restaurant, I usually opt for beer (again there are several choices) but wine drinkers are well cared for too.
