I discovered at the weekend that there is a camera museum at Vevey.

It contains exhibits like the first ever production Leica, see above.

The museum is set on Lake Geneva, not far from Chateau Chillon and covers photography from it’s beginnings just over a century ago, right up to today. It covers techniques as well as equipment, with features on the inventors of milestone equipment.

The permanent exhibition features magic lanterns, camera obscura etc,  in a 500 square metre setting.  And photographers past and present are featured in regularly changing special exhibitions.

For youngsters, there are many games and hands-on installations.

Sometimes I think that the Swiss flag should be green, white and blue.

Maybe with a bit of brown to represent the cows too.

Today I’m featuring a series of photos taken by StrahlemannBE that show Switzerland in its classic natural summer beauty.

I’m guessing that the BE at the end of the name mens that Herr Strahlemann comes from the Canton of Bern,

but some of these pictures were apparently taken in Obwalden,  one of the original cantons to form the Swiss (or Helvetic) Confederation in 1291.

Whatever, I hope you’ll agree with me that Herr S has done a great job, and that Switzerland is quite simply an enchanting place to live or visit.

Time for a weekly review of some of the best photos (at least, the best in my opinion) to come out of Switzerland this week.

First up was Kev Allen’s photo of the Jet d’eau at sunset, down in Geneva.  I love the spiral of water on that.

Next, MeckiM@c’s study of the undulating green countryside around Rigi, where the wrestling will take place this weekend.

Then on to a moody cereal field shot by ponte1112:

and the obligatory black and white shot in the city. Zurich Main Station, or HB as it is known.

Belpo caught it looking pretty empty after the throngs of the EM.

And finally, how I could I not choose MaioloDaniele’s picture of a 1950’s F1 Ferrari hurtling through the Graubunden countryside? It looks very much like a Ferrari 500 to me, but I could be wrong. Feel free to correct me!

This shot shows just what amazing skies can be seen, although I suspect a bit of filtering or photoshopping has taken place. Whatever, it’s beautiful and a great shot.

It’s worth a trip in winter too. Old buildings look great with a light coating of frost, or even snow.

Just to show how civilized we Europeans are, take a look at this torture chamber… Hopefully not used any more, not even if you try to sneak in without paying.

I guarantee that if you go to Chillon, you will take a photo like this. Assuming you remember your camera of course…

This last shot shows Chillon from Montreux. It’s a very pleasant walk along the lakeside, and if you get tired it’s easy to get a train, or boat, back.

Oh yes! My God it tipped down. Fortunately I was under cover, but still got soaked.

Two countries that have impressed so far – Holland and Portugal.  And the fans have all been remarkably well-behaved…

…even with the amount of beer that is being consumed!
