If you’re planning to go to the Jazz Festival in Montreux this year, then maybe this is the place to stay.

The Hotel Tralala is designed for music lovers; 33 rooms and 3 suites all named after famous musicians and composers who have contributed to Montreux’s rich history. So if you’re a David Bowie fan ask for his room; or maybe you’re more of a Stravinsky lover?

The hotel was originally built in 1616 and refurbished this year, and the good news is that it’s not expensive; double rooms are available from CHF 130-320 depending on size and season. Breakfast is included.

The hotel is located in the quartier des Planches about 500m from the train and the station.

If you’re on the look out for a modern stylish hotel, you could do much worse than the new hotel down at Sihl City.

Built as part of Zurich’s latest shopping centre, it’s ideally situated for both cars and public transport.

It’s located about 400 metres/yards from the motorway to Chur, and has a train station and train and bus stops within 2 minutes walk.

It’s a pleasant place to meet just for a drink, very loungy, and the rooms are considered to be spacious and trendy.

And of course there are lots of shops nearby, a multiplex cinema and a number of restaurants, all varying in price.

Rooms start around 180 CHF/Person/night, and there are around 120 rooms, so availability is usually not bad.

If you’re looking for an unusual hotel (although I don’t know why you would be!) in Zurich, why not try the Leoneck?

It has 78 rooms, all decorated by an allegedly famous local artist.

I think their website gives a good impression of the flavour of the place www.leoneck.ch so take a look and explore the wacky world of the crazy cow!

The hotel is well-situated, a double room will set you back around 160-240 CHF/night.

Other than that, you’re on your own.

Artosa. Art, in Arosa – brilliant!

15 international artists are exhibiting sculptures in the open air: in the pastures and meadows around Arosa.

There are also great natural sights to see, such as the reservoir shown above.

The Hotel Sorell is offering rooms in Arosa from CHF 90 per person/night for the summer period, 14 Jun – 28 September.

So you can indulge a taste for nature, art and fresh air, at a reasonable price.

Recommending hotels in Zurich is a bit tricky for me, because being local, I don’t tend to stay in them. But when I come across one that seems great value, then I feel bound to tell you about it.

The Lady’s First design hotel, falls into that category.

Run by women, the hotel provides quality facilities in an ambience intended to cultivate relaxation. Expect a decent hairdrier for example!

There’s a ladies-only wellness area, and you can also fit in cosmetic treatments - waxing etc, along with a whole list of stuff I don’t even want to think about. I confess to wondering what eyebrow-correction involves though – how delinquent do they have to be to qualify?

Rooms don’t seem expensive (for Zürich) a double room can be had for CHF 135/person, and there are packages with special rates for weekends and holidays.  You’ll also get a proper breakfast, and there is Italian food available in the evenings.

The hotel also puts something back into society. There are 12 part-time positions for unemployed women in need, a model I think is brilliant and should be used more often.

Travelling to Geneva?

Need an aesthetically designed hotel?

Well, you could certainly do worse than the Hotel Auteuil. Even if it does have more vowels than you can shake a stick at.

For a four star hotel it’s not expensive; 200-260 CHF will get you a very pleasant double room, with all fitness facilities (and, amazingly for Switzerland, WiFi) thrown in.

Key words: Style, Design, Urban, Soothing, Aesthetic.

Not much more to say, really.

Except “book early”.
