Flying House

Flying House

Another bit of crazy architecture – this time from Appenzell.
I’m trying to work out who the architect is, any ideas?
It’s above a hill in Herisau, and is visible from the train.

Old and New

Old and New

Something the Swiss do well, and a lot, is to mix old and new.
They are really not afraid to put something from the 21st century next to something from the 14th.

Renzo Piano – Beyeler Basel

Renzo Piano – Beyeler Basel

The Beyeler Foundation in Basel is a magnificent piece of work, both inside and out.
It hosts a collection of modern art, with regular features on major, and not so major, artists.
I love the lily pond, especially as it is situated outside the window of the room where Monet’s famous tryptich of Water Lilies is on display.
Fabulous.

Botta – Santa Maria degli Angeli

Botta – Santa Maria degli Angeli

Architecture again, this time Botta’s chapel at Monte Tamaro in Ticino.
I’m not sure if it’s related to the Michelangelo Santa Maria degli Angeli e Martiri in Rome (St Mary of the Angels and Martyrs) but it’s still a successful piece of modern architecture.

It occurred to me that it might be interesting to plan a trip round Switzerland based on the works of famous architects.
I’ve already covered, or at least touched on, some of those buildings:
Corbusier’s White House
Renzo Piano Paul Klee Museum
Calatrava St Gallen Stadelhofen
Now it feels right to extend the list to cover more works by these architects, as well as others such as Mario Botta.
The photo above is another aspect of the Paul …read more
