Bern (or Berne if you prefer)

While Zürich and Geneva are the most populated and business-based cities in Switzerland, Bern is still the capital of the country and seat of national government.

It’s also a really attractive city to visit and wander round, and the covered pavements/sidewalks mean that it’s a great destination even on a rainy day.

There always seem to be loads of clocks to marvel at, and some unusual shops, so rather than give you a list of must-sees, I think it’s a city to visit and just work out for yourself what you like.

One of the symbols of Bern is the brown bear, and some of these can be seen in the bear pit, which is located at the eastern end of the city by the Nydeck bridge.

It’s not a pretty site, and the bears really don’t look as thought they are having fun, but the word is that the bears don’t spend long there, spending most of there lives in a much more humane (bearmane?) location.

While you are visiting, make sure to buy them some carrots and help them get through the day!
