Dufourspitze

The Dufourspitze is the highest point in Switzerland at 4634m (15,203 ft) above sea level.

It’s located near Zermatt, and has a the Gorner Glacier running down from it towards the town.

In the picture above, the peak is located on the left hand side, it’s more visible below.  

I’ve posted this as I was asked (see http://www.theswitzerlandtraveler.com/ask-the-switzerland-traveler/) to put some photos up, and thanks to Ron Layter’s excellent shots, I’m happy to oblige.

The peak (Spitze) was named after Guillaume-Henri Dufour an engineer and cartographer who produced aseries of maps for the military.

On his map, the peak was names as “Highest Peak” which while accurate, doesn’t sound particularly romantic.
