A New Record!
I thought after the last world cup, that the Swiss had set one of the most unusual records: namely that they got knocked out without conceding a single goal, either in normal play or in extra time.
They also became the only team to take part in a penalty shoot out and not score a single one. In fact they have never scored from the penalty spot in a World Cup finals match.
But now, Switzerland have taken the record for the fastest exit from the EM for a home nation.
Four days into the championship, and they are out after losing 2-1 to Turkey, a game they looked to have under control in the first half.
And then it stopped raining, and the Turks came back with a vengeance.
The Swiss do get to play again against Portugal, but it will not affect the outcome. Portugal have already qualified and Switzerland can’t.
Still, the Swiss are good at being neutral, and are ideal hosts to travelers, so it won’t affect the remaining games, it’ll mean everyone will be more focussed on the restaurants and bars that have sprung up in the streets.
