Solothurn: Swiss Art Supermarket

How do you choose a work of art?
Do you look for something that matches the colour of your sofa? Something “safe” that everybody knows – a poster from IKEA for example? Something edgy that nobody else will have, or even like? Or something that excites and awakens your senses everytime you see it?
In the heart of the old town of Solothurn, 75 artists from eight different countries are exhibiting their wares; totalling about 5,000 works of art.
The Swiss Art Supermarket is entering its eighth year, and is unusual in trying to attract everyone, not just cognoscenti. It takes place in Kronenplatz Solothurn.
Works of art are available at very affordable prices; from CHF 99 up to CHF 599 for the most expensive.
The supermarket has the following goals:
- to take art to a new and wider public
- awake interest in art, and show that purchasing art is possible for anyone
- make a stand against cheap goods offered by large companies
- show that purchase of original art is an alternative to buying copies
- enrich the artistic landscape of Switzerland
- offer a large number of artists the possibility of international presentation.
Looks good enough for me, I’m on my way…
Open: M-F 14-20; S,S 11-17. Closed 25 Dec, 1 Jan.
