Blaue Ente
It might not be in the middle of town, but in a converted textile mill down by the lake is one of my favourite Zurich restaurants. The Blue Duck (I am famed for my literal translations) has been around for a few years now, and is still as good as ever.
The building still has a heavy focus on the industrial, lots of pipes, motors and drive belts to look at if the company gets boring. But chances are you’ll be people watching, as the place fills up with young sophisticates. I’ve been known to go there too.
There is also a bar, very much in the lounge style. Friendly service and a pleasant ambience is a great combination in my book. Ideal for a relaxing drink after work, snacks are available.
Another favourite is the Miller’s Studio, a theatre in the rebuilt mill complex, so the combined wine-and-dine tickets are sure to be a hit. Starter and Main, then off to the theatre and back to the bar for dessert and coffee. That’s what I call civilised.
The food in the restaurant has a modern feel to it, for an idea of what’s on offer, how about Duck (not blue, last time I looked) ravioli with creamy orange butter sauce, followed by roast trout in a champagne sauce? Vegetarians are well served too, I quite like the sound of the cauliflower souffle!
Expect to pay up to CHF250 for two, including a reasonable bottle of wine.
