Zürich Restaurants: Hiltl

Zürich Restaurants: Hiltl

Meat is Murder used to be the cry of the Vegetarian brigade, but in Zurich there has been no need for that for, well, ages.
Zurich is home to the Hiltl Restaurant, which is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Europe, having opened it’s doors to the public back in the 19th century.
It’s just had a bit of a makeover, but the traditional vegetarian buffet is still there, along with a selection of fantastic dishes.
It’s so good we take even pure carnivores there, there really is something for everyone, and they also do a party service, which I’m happy to say …read more

Family Ski Resorts: Amden

Family Ski Resorts: Amden

If you don’t fancy being surrounded by teenage snowboarders or hurtling skiers, then there are plenty of other possibilities to ski with the family.
One of these resorts is Amden, located about an hour east (by car) of Zürich.
One of the problems with most small resorts is that they are relatively low compared to some of the larger resorts and are therefore not as snow-sure.
But it does seem to always have enough to keep the slopes open
Amden is lovely in the summer too, ideal for hill walking and enjoying the alpine scenery

If you plan to ski, check snow conditions first, …read more

Merry Christmas from the Switzerland Traveler

Merry Christmas from the Switzerland Traveler

I’d just like to wish you all a happy Christmas, or whatever festival you choose to celebrate, or even not celebrate. Enjoy the holidays, here’s the Swiss Parliament in Bern, courtesy of: Desirée

Bern (or Berne if you prefer)

Bern (or Berne if you prefer)

While Zürich and Geneva are the most populated and business-based cities in Switzerland, Bern is still the capital of the country and seat of national government.
It’s also a really attractive city to visit and wander round, and the covered pavements/sidewalks mean that it’s a great destination even on a rainy day.

There always seem to be loads of clocks to marvel at, and some unusual shops, so rather than give you a list of must-sees, I think it’s a city to visit and just work out for yourself what you like.

One of the symbols of Bern is the …read more

Basel: Bar Rouge

Basel: Bar Rouge

Switzerland is not renowned for its tall buildings.
Mountains yes, buildings no.
So there are very few opportunities to get high above the city and look down on the lights at night.
But the Messe Hotel in Basel does offer that opportunity. It’s the tallest building in Switzerland that I know of, and rather sensibly, they put a bar at the top of it.
It’s located on the 31st floor, and I know this is going to sound weird, but make sure you visit the toilets/restrooms. Let’s just say it’s an unusual experience…
It can get pretty crowded (the bar, not the toilets) leading …read more

Swiss Lakes: Bodensee aka Lake Constance

Swiss Lakes: Bodensee aka Lake Constance

When I first moved to Switzerland I lived in Konstanz (Constance), just on the German side of the Swiss border. One of the great beauties of the town is the lake there, the third largest in Europe.
The lake is surrounded by three countries, Germany, Austria and (you guessed it) Switzerland.
The Swiss part runs from Kreuzlingen (which merges smoothly into Konstanz, apart from the border crossing) along through Romanshorn and almost up to Bregenz in Austria.
The photo above is a sunrise taken from Arbon, which lies on the shore north of
St Gallen.
There’s also a much quieter part of …read more

Engelberg – Ski Jumping

Engelberg – Ski Jumping

Engelberg is one of the most popular ski resorts near Zurich, featuring ice caves and a revolving cable car.
Next weekend it also becomes the centre of attention for all in the ski jumping world.
So if you have finished all of your Christmas shopping, the wrapping is done and the turkey plucked, then why not head down to central Switzerland to watch some crazy people flying through the air?
The FIS World Cup event runs from Friday 21st to Sun 23rd, with training on the Friday and the real thing on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are 25 CHF for adults, 12 CHF …read more

Restaurant: Zeughauskeller – Zurich

Restaurant: Zeughauskeller – Zurich

Slap bang in the middle of Zurich is one of the most traditional restaurants you’ll find in Switzerland.
And surprisingly, it is exceptionally good value!
Haute Cuisine its not – as I sad we’re talking tradition here.  But tasty and good is what the food is, with the menu being heavily biased towards the good old sausage.
You may remember  a while back, when dear old Hugo recommended the sausages at Sterne-Foifi, but he says this place is even better.
It’s Hugo’s ambition to work through all of the different types of sausage on the menu, and I suspect that given the chance …read more
